Academic Policies

1Purpose

The purpose of this policy on MS/PhD courses is to define the management of academic programs and academic guidance on students’ theses, including general requirements, to complete coursework following the academic policy.

2Credits

  1. ① All MS students must complete a minimum of two core courses (except the Graduate Seminar Series) and five major courses. All PhD students must complete a minimum of three core courses and eight major courses before completing their MS/PhD program.
  2. ② All MS students must complete a minimum of two courses and all PhD students must complete a minimum of three courses in the Graduate Seminar Series. 
  3. < 25 credits in MS course, 37 credits in PhD (integrated MS/PhD) course, mandatory for Graduate Thesis study 1 course, Research Ethics 1 course.>

3Prerequisite requirements for students majoring in other fields

Students majoring in other fields registered at the School of Medicine of Kangwon National University must complete subject prerequisites by taking the subjects during the MS/PhD course (two subjects or six credits) with the approval of your supervisor. (These six credits of prerequisites do not count toward your dissertation).

4Supervisor

The appointment of such an individual as the principal supervisor of a graduate student is subject to prior approval of the supervisor, and the appointed supervisor guides the student through the research and writing of the thesis to complete an MS/PhD degree.

5Qualification Examination

  1. MS course : All MS students, except those who bypassed their MS program, will be appointed by the Dissertation Committee members except if your supervisor serves as the chair of the Dissertation Committee.
  2. PhD course : All PhD students, except those who bypassed their PhD program, will publish a minimum of two major related research papers from a PhD thesis (The student registered since first semester of 2012 must publish a minimum of two research papers in SCI, SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI or the registered journals in KCI by the National Research Foundation of Korea), will be appointed by the Dissertation Committee members except if your supervisor serves as the chair of the Dissertation Committee.

6Graduate Council

  1. ① The Graduate Council established by the Department of Medical School governs graduate degree requirements and aspects of graduate program management for the advancement of knowledge through research and instructions of the highest quality.
  2. ② The Graduate Council includes one delegate from the Graduate School, four representatives, the Dean of the KNU Institute of Medical Science, and the KNU Institute for Clinical Medicine. The Dean of the Graduate School, as a chair, shall preside at the Graduate Council meeting.
  3. ③ The Graduate Council governs graduate policies, curriculum, budget, and maintenance of scholarship, advanced management of academic and research program. The responsibilities of Graduate Council function to the approval of credits of Graduate school of Medicine.

The Academic Policy Act requires the registered students on March 1, 2022.
